Is Computer-Based testing Right For Me?
You may want to consider computer-based testing (CBT) if you want to
- take Early Childhood Education, Elementary/Middle Grades, English Language Arts, Learning Behavior Specialist I, Mathematics, Special Education General Curriculum, or the Test of Academic Proficiency;
- read and answer multiple-choice questions on computer;
- type your responses to the writing assignment(s) on the test;
- test in Chicago, Marion, Peoria, Schaumburg, or Springfield, or outside of Illinois;
- take the test on a weekday or Saturday;
- take the test on a day or in a month when there is no scheduled paper-based test administration;
- schedule your test appointment for a time that is convenient for you.
Before registering for a computer-based test, you should note the following:
- Registration for computer-based testing is by Internet only; payment must be made by VISA or MasterCard.
- Test appointments are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and seating is limited.
- If you test before January 17, 2012, you must wait 120 days after taking a computer-based test before retaking the same test on computer.
- If you test on or after January 17, 2012, you must wait 60 days after taking a computer-based test before retaking the same test on computer.
Finding information about computer-based testing is easy!
On the Web site, whenever there is information that is different for paper-based and computer-based testing, you will see tabs at the top of the page that allow you to click back and forth between the two sections. An example of these navigational tabs is shown below.

Registration and testing information that is specific to computer-based testing may also be identified by the picture of a computer that appears on the left. Just look for this icon or use the tabs to find CBT information!
